Altra Lone Peak: Our Complete Shoe Review
Support Type: Neutral Purpose: Trail Running
When it comes to trail shoes, the Altra Lone Peak is legendary. We’re fans of Altra in general, but this shoe is one of our favorites because of its versatile option for everyday trail running and backpacking.
Trail running, in general, is much more technical in nature because of the uneven and varied terrain (i.e. dirt paths, rocks, roots, mud, generally steeper hills, etc.). You can expect your pace to be a bit slower by having to focus on stability and navigating obstacles.
The Altra Lone Peak is equipped with aggressive lugs on the outsole, offering excellent grip while on the trail – a much-appreciated feature when wet roots appear out of nowhere.
As with most Altra shoe models, the Lone Peak has a Zero Drop – meaning the heal and the forefoot are at the same height, which provides a more natural and flat foot landing. For those not as familiar with Altra, Zero Drop may take a bit of getting used to after years running / striking the ground differently. Altra states this Zero Drop platform will lead to stronger Achilles and lower calf muscles given how the foot will load for propulsion from this position.
Another unique feature of the Altra Lone Peak, and other Altra models in general, is a wider toe box. Unlike traditional running shoes, Altra expands their toe box with many of their modes, giving your feet room to spread out naturally.
What is the difference between the Altra Lone Peak and Altra Olympus?
While Altra Lone Peak and Altra Olympus are similar, they do have differences. You can expect a lighter, more flexible, and responsive feel with the Altra Lone Peak due to it’s lower stack height. This makes it ideal for shorter runs on technical terrain. The Altra Olympus on the other hand, has maximum cushioning and protection for a more stable ride. This is typically better suited for longer distance backpacking, and ultramarathons.
How many miles will the Altra Lone Peak last?
As with most running shoes, there is really no set rule for how many miles each pair of will last because of all the factors that must be taken into consideration. How often you wear the shoes, what terrain you run on, and how you generally take care of your shoes will ultimately determine whether you will extend or reduce the shoe’s lifespan. should expect most quality running shoes to last 300-500 miles with premium shoes being at the higher end of that range. That being said, we’ve seen the Lone Peak easily handle 400+ miles.
Is the Lone Peak good for training?
The Altra Lone Peak is a great option for training and racing trails. In fact, the Lone Peak is consistently Altra’s best-selling trail shoe year after year.
What are other shoe brands/models similar to the Altra Lone Peak?
If you’re looking to compare the Lone Peak to other brands/models, look specifically at Topo Athletic, Hoka Cascadia, and Saucony Peregrine. Each of these models are first rate selections for their brand. However, the closest model to the Lone Peak would likely be the Topo Athletic. The Athletic a similar foot-shape with the wide toe box. And, while not a full zero-drop, the Athletic does have a slightly positive heel-to-top drop (around 5mm).
It’s important to note that when it comes to the shoe’s preference, this is very subjective. What feels good and works well for one runner/hiker, may not be the case for another.
